Join us June 9th at the SAU Library for our first Short Story Discussion.

This weeks story is The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain. The discussion will be held in the 2nd Floor Student Lounge of the Library from 3pm-4pm. If you wish to take part, please read the story beforehand and be prepared to share your thoughts with the other participants. This is a free event and open to everyone.

Once you’ve read the story, think about following questions for discussion:

Discussion Questions

  1. What was your favorite part of the story?
  2. Did the narrator’s friend set him up for the humorous encounter with Simon Wheeler?
  3. What is the significance of the appearance and names Smiley gives his animals?
  4. Does Twain’s use of dialect add to the atmosphere of the story?
  5. Which forms of humor does Twain use throughout the story? Examples?

Hope to see you there!
