Journalist, world traveler, entrepreneur and Iowa native, Beth Howard, author of the recently published book Making Piece: A Memoir of Love, Loss and Pie will speak at St. Ambrose Library at 2:00 PM on July 12. Written following the unexpected death of her husband, the memoir, according to The New York Times, “… describes with warmth and wit how the bitter events in life are set off by the sweet ones-much like the ingredients of a good recipe. Making Piece is a moving account of love and loss.”
Beth honed her pie baking skills at the Malibu Kitchen where she counted Barbra Streisand, Dick Van Dyke, and Steven Spielberg among her loyal followers. Back now in Iowa and living in the house immortalized in Grant Wood’s painting American Gothic, Beth is a pie evangelist. She enjoys teaching others how to bake pies, hosting parties for groups of all ages, and selling her fresh baked wares on weekends at the Pitchfork Pie Stand in front of her iconic home in Eldon, Iowa.
The event is free and open to the public. Those interested may bring their own dessert to share.
