Events and Exhibits for March

February was a busy month here at the library as we paid homage to two bicentennial birthday boys: Abraham Lincoln  and Charles Darwin (both born February 12, 1809! Talk about an auspicious day in history!!) .

  • Thanks to those of you who joined us on February 12th for a  birthday party for  Lincoln’s 200th. Besides the usual birthday cake and balloons, the SAU community donned stove pipe hats and tried their skill at a Lincoln trivia game. The happy trivia winner was SAU student, Becca Bluett, who received an iPod Nano for her efforts. A grand time was had by all.
  • It was with regret that we dismantled the wonderful  display of historical caricatures of Charles Darwin that was painstakingly compiled by Dr. Teri Switzer of the Art Department and her students. Look for a new exhibit to go up in early March.

March will have much to offer those who crave good programming and thought provoking displays.

Join the library as we participate in SAU’s annual Multi Cultural Week by attending the following events that will be held in the library:

  • Home Sweet Home: From Germany to America after World War II Monday, March 23 12:15–1:15 p.m., Media Room, Lower Level Library. Former caregiver, poet, writer, gardener, baker, knitter and volunteer, Irmtraut Schmidt Henning, 90, will tell her story about coming to America in 1952 after living in Germany during WWII. Mrs. Henning became a U.S. citizen in 1960. Come listen to the adjustments Irmtraut made to live and work in America. This fascinating woman will share how she, now a nearby St. Ambrose neighbor, became a caregiver and has made it part of her life to accept the diversity of people in the world around us. Sponsored by the Department of Nursing
  • Home Sweet Home: Buddhism in/and Cambodian Society. Thursday, March 26 12:15–1:15 p.m., Media Room, Lower Level Library. Somnieng Hoeurn, a student at SAU, will talk about Buddhism, how it connects to Cambodian society, and how both have shaped his life. Sponsored by Campus Ministry
  • Photo Contest – “Around the World in a Snapshot.” Sunday, March 22 – Sunday, March 29. Faculty, staff and students will exhibit photos from around the world. Winners will be announced mid-April. Sponsored by the SAU Library and International Education.
